How To Prepare For Electrolysis
Preparing for Electrolysis
Here are our top tips on how to prepare for your electrolysis session:
Choose a qualified and registered electrologist: Before booking your electrolysis session, ensure that you find a properly qualified, regulated, and insured electrologist. This will help to ensure that you receive safe and effective treatment. At Clear Clinic Electrolysis our practitioner Caroline Barrow is educated to level 5 which is the highest Electrolysis qualification available and is also a member of the British Institute & Association of Electrolysis (the BIAE) members must pass an additional series of entrance exams and prove that they are continually maintaining and improving their knowledge annually. The clinic is also fully government licensed and inspected.
Avoid sun exposure: Avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Sunburned or tanned skin can be more sensitive, and electrolysis may cause more discomfort on sun-damaged skin. Your Electrologist may refuse to treat you if your skin is not in the correct condition.
Clean your skin: Make sure your skin is clean before your appointment. Avoid using any make up, creams, lotions, or oils that may interfere with the treatment. This also saves valuable treatment time, you practitioner should always prepare and clean your skin prior to treatment but if you are wearing make up the process can take much longer!
Avoid caffeine: Avoid consuming caffeine before your appointment. Caffeine can stimulate your nervous system, making you more sensitive to pain.
Wear comfortable clothing: Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.
Do not use Retinoids: or prescription skin medications such as Roaccutane, talk to your Electrologist about any skin care routines that you have to ensure they will not negatively affect your treatment.
Communicate with your Electrologist: Make sure to communicate any concerns or questions you may have with your electrologist. This will ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.
Managing discomfort
Everyone’s pain threshold is different, some people manage fine with no additional help especially if the appointment is under an hour. It is very important to make sure that you are well hydrated throughout the time between each appointment to ensure your Electrologist can give the best treatment possible, we need the moisture within the skin to conduct the currant. You can also take 2 x painkillers an hour before (not aspirin.)
Take care of your skin, skin that is healthy will react and heal the most effectively. Do not use excessive skin care routines which could possibly be damaging the skins natural barrier or retinoids which can thin the skin and cause slow healing.
For longer appointments or those with pain sensitivity you can use a mild topical anaesthetic such as EMLA cream or similar, please check with your practitioner on the most effective way to use this cream.
